Funeral service honors fallen Las Vegas Officer Austin Abdelnabi

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Officer Austin Abdelnabi, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer who was killed earlier this month, was honored by fellow officers and family during a funeral procession and service Friday morning.

The procession departed Palm Mortuary, near Jones and Oakey, at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 14. The funeral took place at Central Church, located at 1001 New Beginnings Drive.

The procession took the following route:

• Head north on Jones Blvd, merge onto southbound I-11/US-95, and then onto southbound I-15.
• Exit at Sahara Ave (east), turn south onto Las Vegas Blvd, and continue to I-215 East.
• Take I-11/US-95 north, exit at Russell Rd, and enter the Central Church parking lot.

Officer Abdelnabi was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a call regarding a man with a gun near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street on Tuesday, August 4.

Officials say Officer Abdelnabi was ambushed by a suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Angel Lucas Lindsey.

Officer Abdelnabi is survived his wife, Sage Abdelnabi; his Stepson, Sebastian; his mother, Amy Harvey; his father, Ghaleb Abdelnabi; his brothers, Ahmad Abdelnabi and Ryan Abdelnabi; his step-brother, Seif Abuteyah; his sister, Janae Koury; his grandfather, Daniel K. Harvey (“Рара Dan”); his aunt, Gwinn Harvey; his cousins, Madison Harvey Rerko and Daniel Harvey; Madison’s husband, Michael Rerko; Daniel’s wife, Brittany Harvey; and Daniel and Brittany’s children, Cooper and Nora.

During the funeral service, Abdelnabi was honored by Sheriff Kevin McMahill, his brother Ryan Abdelnabi, and Central Church Pastor Michael Kitchen, among others.

“I didn’t know that ordinary phone calls would someday become memories I would hold onto forever,” his brother said during the service. “You don’t know which conversation will be the last... You don’t know that one day you’ll wish you could just have five more minutes with someone you thought you had your entire life to talk to.”

He added, “The extraordinary things that made him who he was... The way he could make you laugh, the way he showed up, and the way, underneath everything else, he was fiercely loyal to his family and the people he loved. That’s my brother.”

Abdelnabi was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina and was a proud Jordanian-American man, according to his family. He also served his country as a United States Marine before joining LVMPD in 2023.

His family said during the service that they hope he will be remembered not only for how he died, but how he lived: “with courage, conviction, loyalty, humor, love, and an unwavering commitment to the people he served and the people he loved.”
