Coroner identifies woman shot while waiting at East Las Vegas intersection

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas police said an innocent bystander was shot and killed in the east valley Wednesday evening.

Lt. Monique Rodriguez with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the incident happened after 3 p.m. at Bonanza Road and Lamb Boulevard. Dispatch received a call about a shooting, and officers responded.

Rodriguez said officers found a woman, a Hispanic woman in her 50s, sitting in the driver’s seat in a car at the intersection. Officers immediately provided aid, but she died at the hospital.

Early details in the investigation revealed that an armed suspect tried to shoot another man sitting at a nearby bus stop, but ended up shooting a woman in the background.

The woman was later identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as 51-year-old Karla Abarca of Las Vegas.

Rodriguez said a person of interest is detained and in custody. The intended target for the shooting fled the scene and has not called police. Rodriguez urges that person to call police.
