Las Vegas apartment complex residents report safety concerns after break-ins
Woman says she’s afraid to sleep after multiple incidents at Las Vegas complex
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Residents at an apartment complex near I-15 and West Silverado Ranch Boulevard say they feel unsafe after repeated break-ins.
Janielle moved into the complex on Oct. 5, but says she’s already living on edge after multiple security incidents.
“It’s really unnerving to know that people can just kind of come as they please,” shesaid.
December break-in leaves resident shaken
In early December, someone broke into her apartment. She says she came home to find her door kicked in, her puppy shaken up, and her TV and pet camera stolen.
“So not only was it a violation at that moment, it felt like he now knew that I was a single woman living there,” she said.
On Dec. 31, her car was also targeted. She says the windows were shattered, there was damage inside, and items were stolen. Glass shards remain visible in the parking lot.
Security gaps allow easy access
She believes access points like holes in the complex’s fence are part of the problem. She says she has asked management to address the security gaps.
“Because there’s actually a hole right back here in the gate that a person could walk right through,” she said.
During a visit to the complex, a woman was observed attempting to use one of the openings in the fence. When asked about her intentions, she said she was going to see a friend on the other side of the complex.
She also says she often sees people lingering near her unit, including one man using the complex’s electrical outlets to charge devices.
“He will stand right here and pace back and forth and smoke marijuana,” she said.
Playground area raises additional concerns
She says trespassing is common behind the complex’s playground, and she has been too afraid to check the area alone.
“I’ve been too scared, because I’ve seen people walking around there,” she said.
A visit to the playground area revealed clothing left on walls and a knife just feet from where children play.
“Once again, that’s terrifying to have to feel like, you know, just to know, are you safe tonight?” she said.
She says she has reported these issues to the property management, but has seen very little action other than repairing her broken door, which she says is still having problems.
She has purchased her first firearm because of her fear of being inside her home alone.
The property management company did not respond to requests for comment.
After multiple complaints, she says she is now trying to get out of her lease. She is now working to move to a safer location with the help of an attorney.
