LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- Las Vegas Metropolitan police responded to an officer-involved shooting in the Summerlin area on Thursday morning.
Police confirmed the shooting happened on the 500 block of Poplar Leaf Street, near Alta and Pavilion Center drives. Detectives with Metro Police were trying to locate a wanted person in the area. According to police, the suspect was wanted for "violent felony crimes."
The suspect was located at a residence on Poplar Leaf Street and detectives surrounded the home, police said. Officers called out the suspect to try to get him to surrender peacefully.
According to Metro Police, the garage attached to the residence opened and the suspect tried to flee in a vehicle. The suspect rammed the car several times into detective's vehicles in an attempt to escape. Officers opened fire and shot the suspect.
The suspect was taken to University Medical Center and is in critical condition, police said. No officers were injured.
Palo Verde High School, Sig Rogich Middle School and the College of Southern Nevada Summerlin Center were placed on soft lockdown, according to Clark County School District police.
Alta Drive near the scene was closed in both directions, Metro Police said.
This was Metro's third officer-involved shooting of 2019.
