A woman killed in the southeast part of the Valley Saturday has been identified, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office.
Medical examiners said 32-year-old Sheri Anaya died from a gunshot wound of the head and neck.
At 8:54 a.m., Metro police said Anaya was found unresponsive in the 4600 block of Dealers Choice Way, near Boulder Highway and East Harmon Avenue, by the caller.
According to Lt. Ray Spencer, the caller was one of Anaya's two children. Both children are under the age of 10. Lt. Spencer said the children found their mother in the bedroom with a gunshot wound.
Medical personnel who arrived declared her dead at the scene.
Police said a suspect had not been taken into custody, but police believe the suspect to be the father of her children.
It was unknown what sort of relationship the mother and father had, police said.
“It’s scary, it's not safe at all,” neighbor Josh Reffner said.
Neighbors reacted after Anaya was shot and killed in their quiet gated community.
“In general, the complex is really nice, it's really peaceful,” neighbor Cyia Moon said. “You don't see stuff like that.”
“I'm speechless. I'm literally speechless,” Reffner said. “It happened right next to my house and he left with the kids there to find the dead body.”
Reffner said he didn’t know the family’s names, but he did talk to Anaya often.
“I literally just talked to her yesterday before all this happened,” he said.
He added he would also see the father, now suspect, taking their two children to the pool daily.
“I’ve seen the guy before and he didn't seem that type of way,” Reffner said.
Neighbors said they hope the suspect is caught and the kids are being taken care of after witnessing such a horrific scene.
“It’s horrible,” Moon said. “I pray that they will be okay for the rest of their lives. Seeing that as a young kid is probably really going to get to them.”
