LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Neighbors have put up numerous signs showing lipstick on a pig all in an effort to halt a proposed housing project surrounded by historic neighborhoods.

The proposed development is on a 12.8-acre lot near Alta and Campbell Drives.

The item was postponed from the Oct. 13 Planning Commission meeting and could be heard in November. In the proposal, documents call for 61 units with a modern design; among dozens of variance requests, homes would have “a lot size of 3,418 square feet where 6,500 square feet is required.”

A statement from developer Blue Heron states the following:

“Blue Heron has deep roots in the Las Vegas Valley and a history of creating distinctive communities that complement their surroundings. Our plan was designed to respect this historic neighborhood. In response to residents’ feedback, we have delayed the application while revising the plan to reduce density and address other concerns. We remain committed to creating an outstanding community that fits the character of the neighborhood.”

Homeowners in the area are passionate about historic preservation and maintaining the character of the area, filled with mid-century modern homes, large plots of land, horses, trails and various estates once owned by the likes of Ted Binion and Steve Wynn.

“As beautiful as some of Blue Heron’s projects may be, it is completely inappropriate for this neighborhood. So, in this neighborhood it’s putting lipstick on a pig, for sure,” said Michelle Dell, owner of Hogs & Heifers Saloon in Downtown.
