CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) - Nevada Lt. Governor Stavros Anthony says he will propose a bill guaranteeing a minimum of 30 minutes of recess for Nevada elementary school students.

Anthony says his bill will be introduced in the 2027 Legislative Session.

“Sometimes the best thing we can do to help our children succeed in the classroom is to give them a chance to get outside of it,” said Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony. “Kids need time to run, play, make friends, and just be kids. Recess isn’t a luxury, and it shouldn’t be an afterthought in our schools. My proposal is simple: guarantee every elementary school student in Nevada at least 30 minutes of recess every school day. Healthy, active children are better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed.”

Anthony says his bill will lead to better classroom performance. healthier more active children, improved mental health and more time outdoors.

“We’ve worked to give older students more opportunities to experience the outdoors, and now it’s time to make sure our youngest students aren’t missing out on something as fundamental as recess,” Anthony added. “We can teach reading, writing, and math while also recognizing that children need physical activity, social interaction, and time to recharge. Academic achievement and healthy childhood development should go hand in hand.”
