LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A 10-year-old boy is dead and a 9-year-old boy is hospitalized after they were hit while riding an e-scooter in northeast Las Vegas, police say.

Just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday, officials with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department say the crash happened at Butternut Lane and Charnut Lane in a mobile home community, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Pecos Road.

According to a media release, police said the two children were riding a standing e-scooter northbound on Charnut Lane approaching Butternut. At the same time, a 44-year-old woman just made a left turn from Walnut Road and started driving westbound on Butternut, approaching Charnut.

Police said the children did not have the right-of-way and entered the intersection crossing into the driver’s path. The crash caused both children to fall on the ground. Lt. Cody Fulwiler said when officers arrived at the scene, they found two children on the ground and the 44-year-old female driver.

Police started rendering aid. Fulwiler said the 10-year-old child died at the scene, and the 9-yearold boy was taken to the hospital with injuries deemed not life-threatening.

“This is yet another young juvenile who will not be here for the holiday season,” Fulwiler said. “We as adults who have children who ride bicycles and e-devices need to discuss safety. On the flip side, adults who operate vehicles need to slow down and pay attention. Be more aware.”

“We have got to come together as a community, as a family. We have to put a stop to this,” said one neighbor to FOX5 about the growing number of children killed while riding e-scooters.

Police say the pickup truck driver stayed at the scene. The driver showed no signs of impairment and was not injured. The crash does remain under investigation.

The boy’s death marks Metro’s 130th roadway fatality in its jurisdiction so far this year.

Metro says parents need to make sure children understand the dangers of riding e-bikes and e-scooters, just how fast some of them can go, and the rules of the road.
