Since 2015, the amount of money teachers spent on school supplies out of pocket has increased by more than 23 percent, while budgets awarded by districts for supplies have stayed the same or shrunk.

A non-profit organization called AdoptAClassroom.org released a report that survey 4,400 teachers nationwide. Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed said their supply spending topped at $1000.  Nearly every teacher in the country has spent some money on supplies, totaling at 96 percent and up from 91 percent back in 2015.

With the rising costs, educators have turned to crowdfunding sites like GoFundMe for help. Two non-profit organizations also make public pleas to send dollars to classrooms.  A site called Donors Choose has upped the ante by putting in $50 to kickstart a classroom or project, so long as teachers submit their needs to the site by August 10. If you’re a teacher who is still in need, do the math. You have one day to log on and get connected to potential funds.
