LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A woman was critically injured in a car crash near South Valley View Boulevard and Southern Highlands Parkway, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan police.

Police said the driver of a 2017 Ford F-350, identified as Donald Ashton, 54, was heading north on Southern Highlands Parkway when his vehicle struck the right side of a 2015 Hyundai Elantra that was heading south at around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday night. The Hyundai was also on Southern Highlands Parkway.

The passenger in the Hyundai, Norma Duarte-Pensamiento, 36, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to University Medical Center Trauma, police said. As of Thursday morning, Pensamiento was still in critical condition.

Ashton and the driver of the Hyundai, Gabrielle Bazan, 46, both claimed to be injured, according to police. Ashton remained at the scene while Bazan was taken to UMC. Police said none of the drivers showed signs of being impaired.

The intersection was shut down as officers investigated and drivers were urged to avoid the area, according to police.

The collision remains under investigation by LVMPD's Collision Investigation Section.
