LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A knife-wielding suspect was killed during an officer-involved shooting in central Las Vegas on Monday afternoon, according to police.

Officers responded to the Kensington Suites on 2200 West Bonanza Road, near Rancho Drive and U.S. 95 at 12:44 p.m. Metro said officers were responding to a possible suicidal person.

According to police, officers were conducting a welfare check on a tenant after a manager at the property became concerned the man in the apartment was deceased. The manager said it appeared the door had been barricaded and water was running for a while causing damage to the unit below. The manager said they never had an issue with the tenant before when they needed to do maintenance.

An officer and sergeant knocked on the door of the unit and it opened, police said. They were able to contact the man inside and he was "extremely agitated." The officers tried to deescalate the situation and at some point, they said they realized he had something behind his back in his hand.

An officer deployed a Taser but it was ineffective. At that point, police said the man began to swing the knife violently towards the officers.

One of the officers was struck by the knife, police said. He was taken to a local hospital where he was stable, police said.

The officers used a Taser on the suspect again but it was ineffective, police said. The man then turned "swiftly toward an officer" and the officer fired two rounds striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police later identified the officer who opened fire as 44-year-old David Stockton. He has been employed with the department since May 2007. Officer Stockton is assigned to the Community Policing Division's Bolden Area Command.

A release said he was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

This was the third officer-involved shooting since Saturday. Police shot and killed a man after a 16-hour long standoff in downtown Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. Later that night, a man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a shootout with police in the west valley, police said.

Monday's was the 13th officer-involved shooting for LVMPD in 2018.
