CHULA VISTA, Calif. (Meredith/KERO) -- A man suspected of attacking his wife with a chainsaw in front of their children in Whittier, California, has been arrested, police said.
The incident began after Whittier officers responded to reports of a possible attempted murder. Officers arrived to find a woman suffering traumatic injuries believed to have been caused by a chainsaw, which was recovered at the scene.
Alvarez fled the scene, leaving two of the couple's three kids who witnessed the attack covered in blood, KABC-TV reported. While fleeing, police said Alvarez stole two vehicles, the first of which he crashed.
He was found with the second stolen vehicle in Chula Vista, police said.
Gloria Mojica, Alvarez's wife, was taken to a trauma center for surgery following the attack. Her condition is unknown.
The Whittier Police Department updated its Facebook post about the alleged incident after Alvarez's capture.
On July 12, 2018, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Whittier Police Detectives working in partnership with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Chula Vista Police Department located 32-year-old Alejandro Alvarez and he was safely taken into custody from the 3100 block of Main St. in the City of Chula Vista.
Police detectives developed information leading to his whereabouts and he was found by local law enforcement still in possession of the stolen vehicle. He will be transported back to the Whittier City Jail where he will be booked on charges of attempted murder, child endangerment, hit & run and grand theft auto. Bail has yet to be determined.

Today, at approximately 3:00 p.m., officers responded to the 7700 block of Milton Ave. in the City of Whittier regarding an attempted murder stemming from a domestic violence incident.
When officers arrived they found a female adult suffering from traumatic physical injuries, believed to have been inflicted by a chainsaw. The victim was transported to a local trauma center and her current condition is unknown. Detectives have identified the suspect as 32-year-old Alejandro Alvarez of Whittier.
Alvarez is described as a male Hispanic, 5’ 3”, 130lbs with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a brown “Hurley” t-shirt and dark jeans. He is believed to be driving a stolen 2004 Mercury Mountaineer, SUV, 4-door, blue/tan in color with California license plate number 8ABD233. Though the chainsaw has been recovered, Alvarez is to be considered armed and dangerous.
