LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A suspect killed after a police pursuit led to an officer-involved shooting in downtown Las Vegas has been identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Medical examiners said 22-year-old Fidel Miranda died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Las Vegas Metro police said officers located a black Ford Expedition with two men inside at 9:30 a.m. in the area of 29th Street and Constantine Avenue. Police said the suspects were connected to an early morning homicide at a car wash in the 1400 block of North Eastern Avenue where a man was shot in the chest and later died at a hospital around 10 a.m.

Officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the suspects fled at a high speed. Police chased the suspects. As the pursuit escalated, the suspects opened fire and shot at police multiple times, according to officials.

Gunshots were exchanged between Metro police officers and the suspects until they arrived at 18th Street and Ogden Avenue. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into a wall at Hollingsworth Elementary School.

One man got out of the SUV and attempted to run onto the school's campus. He was found with a gunshot wound and transported to University Medical Center where he was arrested. The suspect has not been identified.

"I'm freaking out, you know I don't know what to do. My poor child goes to this school and it's ... I'm so scared and nervous," mother Keli Cruz said. "I'm just glad that they got the guy because that could have been my son."

Police said the second suspect, later identified as Miranda, got out of the SUV, again tried to flee, but died on scene.

Some neighbors said they feel like their children are safe at school, even though the surrounding area is riddled with crime.

"People die in this area a lot," neighbor Alaric Overbey said. "Down here, this is a different Fremont Street experience."

Metro police said no officers were injured.

Multiple road closures were in effect as investigators pieced together the scene.

Drivers were urged to avoid the following areas:

  • Southbound Mojave to Charleston Boulevard
  • Eastbound Charleston Boulevard to Fremont Street
  • Northbound Fremont Street to Bruce Street
  • Northbound Bruce Street to Ogden Avenue
