LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police arrested a man who allegedly raped and violently beat a man at a northeast Las Vegas homeless camp.

Johnny Sanchez, 31, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count of attempted murder and one count of sexual assault, according to jail records. Sanchez was accused as the perpetrator in the rape and beating of a 25-year-old man on July 4.

A police report said Sanchez told a witness he "killed a 14-year-old" as he walked down the street near East Carey Avenue and Mt. Hood Street. The witness called police and said Sanchez had blood all over his hands and shoes.

Multiple officers responded to the call and found Sanchez in the 6000 block of Carlsbad Avenue at 1:51 p.m. He was wearing blue jeans, no shirt and had visible tattoos on his back. He was also carrying a black duffel bag, police said.

Sanchez began rambling inaudible statements to police without being asked to speak. Officers said they later deciphered his words after reviewing body camera footage. Sanchez reportedly mumbled, "I don't care, Devil gang," and, "Don't do that, I'm going to hit you until you fall."

Sanchez told police "a little kid was in the alley" and agreed to take them to the location in exchange for water. The victim was later identified as a 25-year-old man.

At 2:40 p.m., officers found the victim at a homeless camp in the underpass of Sloan Lane and Judson Avenue. The man was lying unconscious on the ground with a belt wrapped around his neck and his body covered in blood. He appeared to have significant injuries all over his body but especially on his head. Police said he only had a shirt on.

The man was described as being 5'6" tall, about 140 pounds with a shaved head and groomed eyebrows.

Officers collected over 40 items as evidence at the scene including two used condoms with traces of blood.

He was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition. Medical personnel said the man had a nose fracture, broken ribs, head injuries, a collapsed left lung, a jaw fracture, a torn left ear lobe, signs of strangulation and a foreign metal object inside his skull in addition to internal hemorrhaging and multiple lacerations around his body, the report said. Nurses also added that the man had significant trauma to his rectum.

Sanchez was transported to the Northeast Area Command station for questioning where it was later determined he was not competent enough to speak with investigators.

Police said Sanchez was barely able to stand, was talking to himself and to imaginary people. Investigators were able to swab parts of Sanchez's body and take photographs after obtaining a warrant.

Sanchez was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 7 at 1:15 p.m.
