LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Heavy rains flooded streets, stalling vehicles and lightning strikes caused fires and power outages throughout the Las Vegas Valley Monday night.

The storms grounded many flights, delaying departures and arrivals at McCarran International Airport. Palm trees started on fire and some trees landed on top of cars, causing damage. Many crashes were reported as well, damaging vehicles and causing injuries. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect Monday night.

State Farm Insurance said they have not tallied the number of insurance claims they have received following Monday's down pour, but said they were still receiving calls through Tuesday afternoon.

The insurance company if an uprooted tree causes damage to your property, most home owner insurance policies will cover the cost to remove the tree.

In the event that you need repairs done to your home, vet the company you hire. Specifically, ask to see certificates of insurance to be sure both liability and workers compensation insurance coverage is carried. The representative also suggested contacting your local better business bureau to check for complaints filed against the contractor.

You may also contact your National Roofing Contractors Association for assistance in locating a professional contractor at 1-800-USA-ROOF or 1-800-872-7663 or go to http://www.nrca.net/.
