LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Clark County Department of Air Quality issued an air quality advisory for Monday due to elevated levels of dust in the air caused by thunderstorms in Arizona bringing dust into the Valley.

Airborne dust is a form of air pollution called particulate matter and can aggravate respiratory diseases, the department said.

Under windy conditions, anyone with heart or lung problems, older adults and children would feel better staying inside as much as possible, as they could be at a greater risk from particulates, according to the department.

The department said county air quality officials will continue to monitor conditions and post updates online.

Clark County offered tips on how to limit exposure to dust:

  • Limit outdoor physical activities on windy days when dust is in the air
  • Keep windows and doors closed
  • Run your air conditioning inside your house and car to filter particulates
  • Change your air filters if they are dirty
  • Drive slowly on uphill roads to keep dust down
  • Don’t take shortcuts across vacant lots
  • Ride off-road vehicles in approved areas outside the valley
  • Contact the department's dust complaint hotline at 702-385-3878 to report any excessive amounts of dust blowing from construction sites, vacant lots or facilities
