LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A local woman is paving the way for other young women in Nevada. She's a Project 150 scholarship student who got accepted into a prestigious Ivy League program in a field dominated mainly by men.

Yaquelin Lizaola is a 22-year-old college student.

“My parents actually immigrated to this country when they were about my age,” Lizaola said.

She got a scholarship to UNLV through Project 150, and is using it to pursue landscape architecture.

“There's not many women in that field, in that program to be honest,” Lizaola said.

She's interning at a landscape management firm and has been learning every aspect of the job.

“She's one of those people that you can throw things at and very quickly she picks it up fast, she's got a great attitude,” her boss Blaine Mugleston said.

“It's not always office work, like you're out there in the field meeting the guys, seeing what it takes to be successful in something like this,” Lizaola said.

Harvard accepted Lizaola to the prestigious summer program.

“It was something that in my head, I would have never thought I'd want to apply to such a prestigious college,” Lizaola said.

In the end, Lizaola had to turn the program down because of money, but says it hasn't discouraged her from pushing forward.

“You have to keep pushing and don't be afraid to just jump into things because they won't fall from the sky, you have to really go for it no matter what it takes,” Lizaola said.

Lizaola is set to graduate in the next year and a half. After that, she plans to get her license. She says she wants to keep encouraging other girls to pursue their dreams.
