MOBILE, AL (WALA/Meredith) — A dog owner in Mobile, Alabama is heartbroken after his 110-pound Rottweiler was pulled into the water and eaten at a local park.
The incident happened last weekend at Arlington Park in Mobile as Rauson McClure was taking his dog Bella for a walk near the water.
The calm waters at the park will now forever haunt McClure because of what happened the last time he ever saw Bella.
McClure says two-year-old Bella was in the water and swimming back to him when a massive alligator snatched the dog.
"I thought [the alligator] missed her, but it got a hold of her hind leg and drug her there," McClure tells WALA.
McClure says Bella looked at him in the eyes as the alligator pulled her under water. Once Bella and the alligator could no longer be seen, McClure says "That was it, and I left."
McClure says Bella loved the water and he could never keep her out of it.
"She was a protector, always within a foot from me at all times... just a beautiful animal," McClure tells WALA.
A sign warning visitors about alligators is posted in the park. However, McClure says he hopes this tragedy will make people even more aware of the dangers that lurk in the water. He tells WALA the alligator could have easily snatched a person.
"I hope no one ever has to see anything like that happen in their lives, ever," McClure says. "I watched [Bella] get drug away, drug under."
