(Meredith) – Police arrested the mother of an 8-year-old boy who allegedly shot his little sister four times with a rifle in Ashland County, Ohio.
Alyssa Edwards, 27, left her children home alone on Saturday while she and her husband went to work, The Alliance Review reports. Her husband apparently thought she had taken the children to a babysitter.
After her son reportedly shot his 4-year-old sister with a .22-caliber rifle, Edwards returned home to check on the children. She then returned to work without taking her injured daughter to the hospital, according Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell.
“She came home, cleaned up a bed cover with blood on it, examined the 4-year-old and was aware the (girl) was injured at the time,” Tunnell told the newspaper. “And despite that knowledge, clocked back in at work.”
It wasn’t until she noticed urine leaking out of her daughter’s wound that she decided to take both children to the hospital, which happened to be several hours after the shooting, Tunnell said.
Police later arrested Edwards on child endangerment charges. She’s expected in court on Wednesday.
Her daughter is in stable condition at the hospital. Both children have been removed from the home.
