With Christmas just days away, packages are landing on Valley door steps.

“There are people who will try to follow these delivery trucks and try to get those packages that are being delivered to unattended residences,” said Las Vegas Metropolitan police officer Aden Ocampo-Gomez.

In anticipation of a spike in crimes related to the holidays, Metro created this initiative.

“It’s so brazen,” package theft victim Ashley Linn said.

In a lot of cases, like Linn’s, suspects continue to steal packages in spite of security cameras that are present on a property.

“I saw her walk up, pick up the package, and walk back down the driveway,” Linn said.

The suspect got away with a $20 gardening tool.

Linn told FOX5 she notified police. She also said she placed new instructions for her mail delivery person to avoid future thefts.

Other tips for package recipients: Talk to your neighbors, have your packages delivered to your job sites, and re-route or reschedule a delivery.

You can also utilize Amazon's locker service, require a signature, or pick up your package at the local post office.

Metro told FOX5 while they see a spike in package thefts during the holidays, the numbers are still low because a lot of people choose to call the delivery service or online retailer instead of asking the department to investigate.
