Field trips are usually about getting out of the classroom, but on Monday, 1,200 Clark County Elementary students took a trip to another campus. They found themselves in Rebel Territory.

The students were treated to a UNLV Lady Rebel’s basketball game.

This trip wasn't originally in the plans for Roundy Elementary students, but third-grade teacher Friederike Moderegger thought it would be the perfect change of scenery for her students.

"Our students face a lot of diversity day in and day out,” Friederike said. “So it's very exciting to get them to go on field trips where they can see something they've never seen before."

Friederike was previously a Lady Rebel herself, and after graduating became a teacher at Roundy Elementary.

Roundy is a Title I Elementary School, or low income. That school, along with two other sister-schools, Vegas Verde and Wynn Elementary, took the trip together.

“I'm excited to see the library,” said Maleki Harvey, a student at Roundy. “Because I wonder how a library in college looks."

For many of the students, the trip was a first, many had never been to a college game or visited a college campus, but the field trip was not all about sports.

“I hope that this is a day that they remember,” Friederike said. “I hope that they realize UNLV is right here, this is something they can do, they can go to college later in life.”

The students got a taste of what it might be like in college with readiness classes taught by UNLV students, which helped them make some very attainable goals.

“Personally, I want to go to college so I can learn how to treat and how to take care of animals,” said Roundy third grade student Christina Hernandez.
