(Meredith) – A 70-year-old Virginia man attacked his wife with a hatchet before taking his own life with a chainsaw, police said.

A family member found the man assaulting his 76-year-old wife with the blunt side of a hatchet, when she arrived at their home Wednesday afternoon, the Springfield Police Department said in a statement.

The female relative rescued the victim and both exited the house.

Police said the man followed them outside, where they struggled over the weapon. After someone called 911, the man went back inside the home and shut the door.

Officers later found him lying on the floor of the garage with serious injuries, resulting from a chainsaw. The 70-year-old man later died at the hospital, according to police.

His wife and their relative survived the attack.

Police have not released the name of the suspect to protect the identity of the victim.
