La Paz County (3TV/CBS 5) -

One suspect is dead and another is in custody after an officer-involved shooting in La Paz County early Wednesday morning, according to the Department of Public Safety.

A trooper was performing a traffic stop for a suspended license around 1 a.m. on westbound Interstate 10 near milepost 57 when the driver and passenger exited the vehicle. The passenger opened fire at the trooper with a submachine gun.

The trooper was able to fight off one of the suspects, take cover and avoid being hit by any bullets. The trooper then returned fire, shooting out the back window of the blue Ford Mustang before taking the driver into custody.

The passenger got back into the Mustang and took off, driving westbound toward Quartzsite on westbound I-10.

After passing Quartzsite, Border Patrol agents and La Paz County Sheriff's Office deputies spotted the suspect vehicle and began pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect exited the Mustang, crossed the interstate on foot and hijacked a big rig.

DPS said the big-rig driver was sleeping when the suspect assaulted him and held him at gunpoint.

The suspect then drove the big rig eastbound I-10, back toward Quartzsite, where he got off the highway.

He then drove into Quartzsite where troopers, officers and the suspect engaged in another incident, resulting in the suspect being shot and killed.

DPS said troopers, La Paz County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Border Patrol agents worked cohesively to take down this “career criminal."

No officers or troopers were seriously injured during the incident.

Westbound I-10 was closed at milepost 81 for the police investigation but has since reopened.
