PHILADELPHIA (AP/MEREDITH) — A police official is calling the shooting death of a Philadelphia community activist during an attempted carjacking while his 2-year-old daughter sat in the back seat "one of the most horrific things" he's seen in 24 years in the department.

Homicide Capt. Jack Ryan said Monday there was no explanation for the slaying of 38-year-old Gerard Grandzol other than "a touch of evil."

Police say Maurice Roberts, 21, and his 16-year-old brother approached Grandzol outside his home Thursday night. The suspects took his wallet and demanded his car keys.

Grandzol insisted on taking his 2-year-old daughter out of the car before handing over the keys. The 16-year-old  then shot him twice in the head, police said. Grandzol's daughter was not injured in the incident.

No attorney information is available for either suspect.

Ryan said the handgun hasn't been recovered and must have been obtained illegally.

Loved ones describe Grandzol as a devoted husband and father, whose youngest daughter is just six-weeks-old. He was also a community activist in his Philadelphia neighborhood and served on its development board.

His family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
