Expect to pay more to ship your packages this holiday season

Posted: Updated:

UPS will place a surcharge on all U.S. packages this holiday season to help cover its extra expenses caused by the holiday rush. If you plan to ship a package between November 19 and December 2, you can expect to pay and extra 27 cents per package. Between December 17 and December 23 UPS Next Day Air shipping will cost an extra 81 cents, UPS 2nd Day Air will cost an extra 97 cents and UPS Ground shipping will cost an extra 27 cents.

This is the first year UPS has introduced seasonal surcharges. Here's the company's official statement.

At various times throughout the year UPS must flex its delivery network to meet increased demand, including nearly doubling its normal volume during the November and December holiday season. To help enable UPS to continue to provide best-in-class value to customers while offsetting some of the additional expenses incurred during significant volume surges, UPS will begin implementing Peak Surcharges in 2017.

The United Parcel Service Inc. nearly doubles its volume in November and December, and in order to handle the extra business, the company has to hire tens of thousands of temporary workers and acquire more trucks and jets via expensive short-term leases. This year the company will offset some of those expenses by charging a bit more for each package -- more incentive to get your holiday shopping done early.
