HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

A heartwarming act of kindness was captured on camera this week at the Holyoke Mall.

The National Elevator Industry said there are 35,000 escalators in the United States, but it was the one at the mall where a young man stopped to help a stranger.

Alonzo Johnson was just about to leave the Holyoke Mall on Thursday when he noticed an older man was hesitating to go down an escalator.

"He seemed really terrified. Something made me stop and just ask if he wanted to come down with me," said Johnson.

The older gentlemen accepted, and as Alonzo took his arm Paula Picard snapped a picture which she posted to on Facebook.

Paula said her friend offered to help the older man but "Alonzo came by at just the right moment, [and] had just the right tone and was so sweet to him."

When the two men were going down the escalator, Alonzo learned the man had some type of incident where he was stuck on an elevator.

"He was telling me how he is 83 and I told him he looked nice. It was a great moment. I walked away and didn't think anything of it until everyone was tagging me on Facebook," Johnson added.

Paula's picture has since gone viral on social media to the point where Alonzo was recognized at the mall the next day.

Although Western Mass News was not able to get in touch with the older gentlemen, Alonzo would like him to know that if he were to see him again, he would give him a big hug and say,"look what we accomplished."
