LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A University of Nevada, Las Vegas professor is receiving criticism from students and university staff after leaving unsavory comments on a student’s Facebook post.

George Buch, who is a part-time math professor at the university, posted the messages.

“It’s hateful and violent and ignorant,” said UNLV student Jazz Scheffer. Scheffer is a member of UndocuNetwork, an on-campus organization meant to give undocumented students a safe space.

“It scares me that he feels so comfortable with the stance that he could say this in public,” Scheffer said.

Wednesday night, a former student of Buch’s shared a post about UNLV president Len Jessup signing a letter in support of the deferred action for childhood arrivals program and undocumented immigrant students.

Buch called undocumented students illegal aliens in the post. He also said while he doesn't mind diversity, he minds criminals.

In another comment Buch said "I would have to turn you into ICE :-). No safe spaces in my classes.”

FOX5 reached out to Buch who said he is meeting with the school’s office of compliance to resolve the situation. Buch taught his afternoon math class Thursday.

Late Thursday, Buch told the Scarlet & Gray Free Press that the comments made were a joke and that he was sorry.

In light of the situation, UNLV also shared a statement highlighting President Len Jessup’s support for undocumented students.

Scheffer and her friends at UndocuNetwork told FOX5 they fight these kind of comments all the time, but never expected it from a professor.

“I don't think I've ever heard it directly from a professor like this," Scheffer said. "Maybe it's the heightened sensitivity post-election. It seemed a little bit harsher but usually the kind of rhetoric that we here like that is coming from students.”

Scheffer hopes this was an isolated incident.
