LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Residents in one Las Vegas neighborhood are disgusted by racist letters circulating in their area.

“This shouldn’t be acceptable to anybody on any level,” said John Leach, partner at Leach, Johnson, Song & Gruchow.

Leach says he has folders filled of hateful letters, including some that warn not to rent homes to minorities, mailed out to seemingly random people.

The letters sent out were on paper from a Las Vegas homeowner’s association and his law firm, but say both have nothing to do with it.

“Shocked, you’re trying to put together how it happened,” Leach said.

This situation has been going on for a year, and dozens of letters, using that same letterhead, have now been mailed all over.

"They've gone to Reno, they’ve gone to Mesquite, they've gone all over the place, and to categorize people in the way that they’ve done… it’s a hate crime," said Leach.

However, local and federal law enforcement have told Leach, the law is fuzzier than that.

"The concern is that the content of the communication doesn’t threaten anybody, it doesn’t say I’m going to harm that group or do something to this group, which then I think would fall into that definition of federal or state guidelines of being a hate crime,” said Leach.

Even without the threats, Leach says the letters are disgusting, and hopes the person behind them gets found.

"Nobody wants this to define or taint the people who live here, this isn’t who we are and I’d like to think this isn’t how anybody outside is either," said Leach.
