LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebel Yell student newspaper has changed its name.

The paper is moving forward with a new identity after some thought the name was racist.

"The Rebel Yell is the confederate battle cry that's not something we would want to associate a news source that is meant to serve a very diverse student body," said Bianca Cseke, Rebel Yell editor-in-chief.

The Scarlet & Gray Free Press is the paper's new name that will debut next semester.

"I think any name is probably better than the Rebel Yell. It's kind of a mouthful but in the end I think people will get used to it," said Rainier Spencer, UNLV Chief Diversity Officer.

However, besides the name, the paper is also facing a financial matter.

"It's really not about the name of the paper in their case it's about what they're covering and how well they're doing it," said Keith Moyer, Las Vegas Review-Journal editor-in-chief.

As Moyer says the LVRJ is considering the possibility of providing financial support to the UNLV student newspaper to save the future of journalism.

"The classes are great and all, but you wouldn't be ready for a job without doing actual journalism," said Cseke.
