#GivingTuesday urges charity in holiday season

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

With Thanksgiving and Black Friday behind us, folks around the world are being urged to use Tuesday for a day of giving back.

"Giving Tuesday" enters its fourth running, which is set aside for the Tuesday after Thanksgiving week.

Beginning in 2012, the campaign urges charity and philanthropy as the holiday season approaches. Outside of monetary donations, people are urged to alternately volunteer their time to community organizations.

Last year, $1.08 million were raised worldwide on the charitable day.

In Las Vegas, the city government is proclaiming Giving Tuesday, highlighting the charitable efforts of LGBT organization The Center.

Elsewhere in Southern Nevada, businesses are giving their time and money to younger members of the community. Master-planned community Skye Canyon plans to donate 100 bicycles to the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada. In addition, Sundance Helicopters is giving a field trip to the Grand Canyon free of charge to students at Southwest Career and Technical Academy.
