LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A University of Nevada, Las Vegas student is bringing a class project to life to help veterans in need.

Nichelle Thomas, a student and retired Navy veteran, is challenging others to sacrifice one thing they would typically buy and give the money they would have spent to local veterans.

"It can be anything, like your favorite gourmet coffee. I donated my, or sacrificed my sushi burrito and so I took the proceeds of what I would normally pay for my sushi and I donated it to the GoFundMe page,” Thomas said.

Thomas said it started out as a class project, but with the help of her teammates it became a reality.

Participants are asked to use “#mysacrificefortheday” on Facebook and share a picture of the item that was sacrificed, then donate the money to the GoFundMe page.

Thomas said the donations will go to the Veterans Transition Resource Center in Las Vegas. Her goal is to raise $2,000 for homeless veterans.
