HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

As cooler temperatures invade the valley, the Henderson Fire Department is reminding the public about precautions when using their chimney after an overnight fire caused substantial damage.

Henderson fire responded to a residential structure fire in the 1000 block of San Gabriel Avenue, near I-515 and College Drive, just after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Arriving firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of a 2-story home. They initiated a defensive attack from the outside and were able to knockdown the flames, using a master stream from an aerial ladder and other hose lines on the ground.

Two residents were home when the fire started and were able to escape without injury, after being alerted by the smell of smoke and calling emergency personnel according to the HFD.

Fire officials said a wood burning stove caused a chimney fire at the residence.

Four engines, one truck, two rescue units and an air-resource apparatus responded to the blaze according to Henderson fire.

The department recommends that homeowners have their chimney professionally cleaned and inspected regularly by a licensed and certified chimney sweep.

HFD also says when using a wood burning fireplace choose seasoned logs and don’t burn other combustibles such as paper or cardboard boxes.

A City of Henderson Senior Fire Investigator, Henderson police and NV Energy responded to help secure the property.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, with the blaze displacing both adults according to Henderson fire.

Officials estimated total losses at $245,000 for the structure and contents.
