LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

About 1,000 people packed into the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada building on Thursday to get a free Thanksgiving feast that many guests say they wouldn't have had if it weren't for the organization.

"I'm full man, it was real good I enjoyed it," Edward Humes said. But for guests like Humes, the annual feast is more than a meal.

"People from all walks of life are right here, and it's not just about the food, it's about being thankful, on not just this day, but every day, because a lot of people don't have this opportunity," Humes said.

"Today, the thanks and the smiles and the meals that the clients get from the volunteers is just as powerful as the food, because it really is a way for them to have that human touch and for them to realize that despite their struggles,  people in our community really care about them," Deacon Tom Roberts with the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada said.

The event ran from 10:00 to 11:00 Thursday morning, and was put on with the help of more than 100 volunteers like Carol Hicks, who has helped with the Thanksgiving feast for years.

"I've been volunteering for more than 30 years, first in Hawaii and then here for about 13 years," Hicks said. "It's just very rewarding, it's just the right thing to do. We have so much so we might as well share our time with others."

Both Hicks and Humes say they're hoping to come back next year, but next Thanksgiving Humes wants to be on the other side of the table.

"Next year I hope to do a little something here myself, volunteer, help out and give back myself. that's what its about," he said.

Workers at the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada say they always welcome volunteers, not just on the holidays. You can find out more information on how to volunteer on their website.
