A Las Vegas family is dealing with their worst nightmare after a loved one was stabbed to death while fast asleep and the suspect is a friend who was staying with the family.

Police said homicide detectives were called to the incident in the 600 block of North Princeton Street, near Decatur Boulevard and Washington Avenue, at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Arriving officers found a man, identified by family members as 21-year-old Kevin Zaldana, stabbed multiple times at the scene. He was transported to the University Medical Center, but was pronounced deceased a short time later, according to Metro.

Police said residents inside the home heard an argument before locating Zaldana in the hallway.

Officers caught up to the roommate, later identified as 20-year-old Jacob Driscoll, at another residence nearby and took him into custody without incident according to Metro.

Cristian Mendoza said his cousin, Zaldana, was the type of person who helped anyone in need and he believes that trait led to his death.

“They were good friends and the kid had nowhere to stay. My cousin, I’ve seen it straight on, my cousin sleeping on the floor just for him to have a bed,” Mendoza said.

Mendoza said Zaldana was stabbed in sleep, but woke up and dragged himself from one room to another in an attempt to get his aunt’s attention.

“He said, ‘mom, mom someone wants to kill me,’ but when I looked at him, he was already full of blood. His whole body was covered in blood,” said Ismenia Magana, Zaldana’s mother.

Magana said Driscoll ran when she threatened to call police.

“I didn’t see him (Driscoll) while I was waiting for the ambulance. My son was there covered with blood. I looked out the window to see if anyone out there that can help me and that’s when I saw him (Driscoll) out the window,” said Magana.

“I think he was hearing voices of something because I mean there’s no motive to it,” Mendoza said. “They did nothing to each other. They were completely fine last night. I was with them.”

As a result of the investigation, Driscoll was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon.
