9 schools recommended for Achievement School District

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nine under-performing schools are being recommended for the possible new Achievement School District. The controversial program would pair these schools with charter operators to try and raise test scores and overall performance.

Five middle schools and four elementary schools were named. The middle schools are Brinley, Jerome Mack, Von Toble, Orr, and Baily. The elementary schools are Cambiero, Craig, Fitzgerald, and Kelly.  All of these schools scored in the bottom five percent on the Smarter Balanced test administered in Nevada.

Parents are worried about the possible change, but some seem to think this move could be for the better, if approved.

“I’d certainly hate to see teachers displaced from their jobs. I mean, I think that’s one of the biggest issues that people are having with that. It would be unfortunate, but, ultimately, sometimes things need to change for change to happen,” supporter of the move, Monique Sanders, said.

The Nevada State Education Association offered a counter plan where parents would have the opportunity to learn all about the charter school program and all about what a reorganized CCSD would look like. Then, they’d vote themselves on whether they want to change to the charter program.

According to NEA, the board is seriously considering this proposal. It thinks a decision could be made as early as December. If it moves forward with the Achievement School District plan, the schools will be narrowed down even more to six schools at the most.
