LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A planned weekend-long closure of the Interstate 215 freeway at the McCarran Airport Connector began Friday night, snarling regularly flowing traffic.

According to Clark County, crews are installing parts of a flyover off-ramp over the highway.

The work is forcing both directions of I-215 to close at the Airport Connector between Friday at 9 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.

In addition, drivers leaving McCarran from the Connector will be able to use Interstate 215 east but will have to use alternate routes for I-215 west. The ramp for the westbound Interstate is due to close.

The county advised eastbound drivers who are not to the airport on the 215 to exit at Jones, Decatur or Las Vegas boulevards. Westbound drivers who are not going to the airport are similarly urged to get off the 215 at Eastern Avenue, Windmill Lane or Warm Springs Road.

Drivers headed from Interstate 15 to 215 east and not headed to the airport are being directed off the freeway at Blue Diamond Road or St. Rose Parkway.

The work is part of a second phase in constructing the Airport Connector to I-215. The project is slated for completion in fall 2017.
