NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

Police said a person working inside a North Las Vegas convenience store thwarted a robbery attempt early Thursday morning, fatally shooting a robber.

The incident occurred at 3:30 a.m. at the 7-Eleven store near Cheyenne Avenue and Civic Center Drive.

According to Officer Ann Cavaricci, of North Las Vegas police, the robber walked into the store and attempted to holdup the clerk. A person who was servicing the slot area of the store fired at the robber.

The robber left the store but collapsed outside, Cavaricci said. That person was transported to University Medical Center, where he later died.

Cavaricci said there were several other people inside the store at the time of the incident.

Witnesses told FOX5 the armed person worked for a gaming detail unit that services and fills safes for slot payouts. They mentioned the robber did not fire back.

Cavaracci said no arrests have been made. Detectives are looking into the legality of the slot employee's gun.

One attorney hopes the shooting doesn't give anyone the wrong idea when it comes to confronting armed criminals in the act.

"We don't want people being vigilantes," said attorney Judah Zakalik, of Peters and Associates. "That's not what we want, and the law will actually go after vigilantes."

Even if everything was done right, Zakalik added the armed man still faces the emotional toll of taking a life.

Authorities did not immediately identify the robber, but people living and working in the area knew him as a known offender.

"He was robbing the Taco Bell and a bunch of other shops in this area," said Alejandro Andrade Llamas, who is a friend to some of the workers at the 7-Eleven. "Finally, they got him."
