LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Fun fact: Only two events require the entire Las Vegas Strip to close each year: New Year's Eve and the Las Vegas Marathon. One of those events is coming this weekend.

The races of the Las Vegas Rock 'n' Roll Marathon are slated to take place on Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday races, which include the 26.2-mile marathon, the 13.1-mile half marathon and the 6.2-mile 10K, will require Las Vegas Boulevard to close, from the "Welcome" sign to Fremont Street in downtown.

The Nevada Department of Transportation announced closures at freeway off-ramps on Interstate 15 as part of the race on Sunday. The closures include:

  • I-15 northbound and southbound at the Tropicana eastbound off-ramps from 3:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
  • I-15 southbound at the Sahara eastbound off-ramp from 2:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
  • I-15 northbound on the Charleston eastbound off-ramp from 2:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
  • I-15 northbound and southbound at the Spring Mountain Rd. eastbound off-ramps from 2:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.

In addition, a number of surface streets are expected to shut down Sunday. A full list of road closures can be found here.

Motorists are urged to plan alternate routes during this evening.

The marathon course for this year is expected to take runners to as south as Sunset Road and to as north as Fremont Street. The course also weaves near the World Market Center closer to the Spaghetti Bowl interchange. A map of the course can be found here.

The race is the flagship event for the touring Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series, drawing tens of thousands to stomp the Strip's pavement. The Las Vegas race is marking 50 years in 2016.

The race is also best known for concerts before or after the event. Snoop Dogg was tapped as the headliner for the Las Vegas race. The concert is set for 3 p.m. at the Las Vegas Village across from the Mandalay Bay and Luxor. It is only open to race participants.
