LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A 9-year-old girl in August died from a prescription drug overdose, and her mother and aunt are now in jail, facing open murder charges.

FOX5 on Friday spoke with the child’s grandmother. She said the child’s mother was keeping her from the rest of the family.

Desire Island said she hadn’t seen her grandchild, Ryleigh, in four years. She said the girl’s mother, suspect Kendra Hatch, kept her away after divorcing Island’s son. She said she didn’t even know that her grandchild lived just minutes away from her until learning of her death.

“She had a whole other family that wanted her and loved her and wanted to see her,” Island said. “We begged Kendra over the past four years, like please just let us talk to her.”

Las Vegas Metro police said Kendra Hatch and the child’s aunt, Mylynda Hatch, gave her someone else’s prescription drugs.

“Oxycodone and hydrocodone in her system - lethal levels. Not just giving her one or two, but lethal. That killed her,” Island said.

According to Island, Ryleigh broke her arm and her mother and aunt were trying to ease her pain rather than taking her to an emergency room.

“You could have saved that baby, you could have. She could be here today, but because you were selfish and did not want to get in trouble, you let her suffer. She laid there and suffered for two days,” Island said.

Kendra and Mylynda Hatch are due in court on Monday. Island said she will be there, holding a picture of her granddaughter.
