LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police said a moped rider died in a crash Friday morning.

The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. near Flamingo Road and Valley View Boulevard.

Sgt. Richard Strader, of Metro, said witnesses stated the rider ran a red light on Flamingo Road when he was struck by a Mazda. The Mazda was making a left turn at the intersection from west to south.

The 48-year-old rider of the moped was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

The rider, identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office as Robert Harris, was transported to University Medical Center, but was pronounced dead, Strader said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the scooter remained at the scene and did not show signs of impairment.

Flamingo Road was shut down in both directions from Hotel Rio Drive to Wynn Road. Motorists were urged to use alternate routes.

The collision remains under investigation.
