A group of Henderson residents is determined to put a stop to plans for low-income, high-density apartments in the area of Arroyo Grande Boulevard and American Pacific Drive.

There is a meeting to discuss the development scheduled for next Tuesday.

“The HOA brought it to our attention. We are members of a PTA board, so we kind of brought the news to them, and then it just spread like wildfire,” opponent Janie Barnes said.

Currently, the site is just an empty parking lot and rocky land. However, it’s very near other developments, and petitioners say that’s part of the problem.

“There are already apartments that are next to that area and across the street from that area, and it’s a small area so you wouldn’t think more apartments would come there,” concerned resident Tiffany Thomas said.

It’s not the building they’re taking issue with. There is concern about adding more people to what was described as an already overcrowded community.

“Adding more and more apartments, they just keep funneling the kids in,” Barnes said.

Opponents said schools in Henderson are at or over capacity and there’s already traffic congestion in the area.

“There’s many accidents there at that four-way stop because there is so much traffic,” Thomas said.

Henderson officials on Thursday said they’ll wait until next week’s public meeting to discuss the issue. The Henderson City Council meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

The development would result in rezoning of the area and amendments to the city’s master plan.
