LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Big changes are underway at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas ahead of Wednesday night’s third and final presidential debate.

At a press conference Thursday morning, representatives from UNLV, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority discussed their plans for the big night.

“It’s the equivalence of what we deploy on New Year's Eve,” said Metro Undersheriff Kevin McMahill. “There’s a reason for that. I don’t want to give away our deployment strategy, but it’s over a thousand officers.”

McMahill said the bill for the department’s presence on debate night comes out to $400,000. Metro is working with both federal and local agencies to ensure the safety of debate-goers and people on and around the UNLV campus.

To date, there are no open threats regarding debate night, according to McMahil. The department is also working with Southern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center.

In addition to extra law enforcement, UNLV is urging the public to plan for debate-related traffic as early as Friday.
