LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A masked person threatened a west Las Vegas Valley bank Tuesday with a backpack he claimed contained an explosive device.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, the incident, which was first reported at 9:39 a.m., caused the closure of South Hualapai Way between Desert Inn and Spring Mountains roads.

Police said the incident took place at the U.S. Bank at 3330 S. Hualapai. The person entered the location with a semi-automatic handgun and a nylon satchel over his shoulder.

The person approached a teller and demanded a manager. He then told both workers he had an explosive device in his bag and demanded money. Police said the man walked out of the bank with cash, leaving the satchel.

Police were called and ordered people to evacuate while they investigated the bag's contents, which were deemed safe.

Police described the robber as a male, between 5'5" and 5'9" in height, with a thin build. Police said the robber got away in a silver compact sedan.

Police urged anyone with information on the case to contact Metro's Robbery Section at 702-828-3855 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
