LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Troopers cited apparent brake failure on a dump truck for a deadly crash that closed State Route 160 at at the southwest edge of the Las Vegas Valley on Monday.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the crash happened on State Route 160 near the Charleston Loop.

Trooper Jason Buratczuk, of NHP, said a dump truck was heading southbound on the state highway when its brakes were not operating. The truck then rear-ended a blue sedan, sending the vehicle off the road.

The dump truck continued southbound and later struck a recreation vehicle in its back end. The impact caused both vehicles to go off road. NHP said the dump truck rolled over on its side.

Two people inside the RV died at the scene. The drivers of the dump truck and the sedan were taken to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash prompted the intermittent closure of the state highway at Mile Marker 18 in each direction. Buratczuk said the road should remain blocked at least through the early evening.

Tony Illia, spokesman for the Nevada Department of Transportation, issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

"There was crash in a department of transportation construction zone today around 11 a.m., which was totally unrelated to any actual construction. Brakes failed on a fully loaded 10-wheel dump truck, hauling concrete chunks and a Bobcat skid steer on a trailer. The driver subsequently lost control, running one car off the road and plowing into a slow moving motorhome, killing two people. However, the truck did not belong to our contractor. And it’s unrelated to the $16.5 million, 5-mile-long widening of Blue Diamond Road (State Route 160) that broke ground in February.

"The truck was simply passing through. The incident will not impact construction. The project, which will expand the highway from two lanes to four travel lanes from Red Rock Canyon Road to Mile Marker 16.63, is still scheduled for completion in early 2017. The fatal crash occurred somewhere near Mile Marker 15. The driver suffered only minor cuts and bruises."
