LAS VEGAS (AP) -

A former Nevada state prison guard trainee is headed for trial in the shotgun death of an inmate behind bars almost two years ago.

A judge in Las Vegas said she heard enough evidence to send Raynaldo John Ruiz Ramos to state court for trial in the November 2014 killing of Carlos Perez Jr. at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs.

Ramos' attorney, Joshua Tomsheck, has said Ramos planned to plead not guilty to the criminal involuntary manslaughter and reckless disregard charges. His arraignment is scheduled Oct. 17 in state court.

The case is one of several stemming from a former prisons policy allowing the use of shotguns to control inmates. A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed in July on behalf of another former Nevada state prison inmate who says he was blinded by shotgun pellets fired by a guard in April 2015 at Ely State Prison.
