HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

A husband accused of stabbing his wife to death with a kitchen knife, while their three children were home, is in jail as investigators analyze his 911 call.

Michael Kaplan, 48, originally told a 911 dispatcher that he did not know who the victim was, according to an arrest report filed by the Henderson Police Department. He later reportedly changed his story, saying he knew that the victim was his wife, 30-year-old Amanda Kaplan.

The husband originally reported that “a female was sick and hurt” and that it was “an accident,” according to the report.

The dispatcher reported hearing a baby crying in the background.

"(Michael) Kaplan told Dispatch that he was unsure if he hurt the female on accident or on purpose," the report states.

Even though he stayed until police arrived, Michael Kaplan exercised his right to remain silent as he was arrested. He did not give any other reason why his wife may have died, police said. The 911 calls will likely be a part of the evidence against him in addition to DNA removed from his body.

Neighbors told FOX5 that Michael Kaplan was only permitted to wear a sheet around his body because his clothes were soaked in blood. They described his demeanor as “remarkably calm.”

Investigators said they found the murder weapon next to Amanda Kaplan’s body in the master bedroom. They say blood analysis indicates her husband stabbed her in the chest while she was lying in bed.

Police said they had never been called out to the house to deal with any issues of domestic violence.

“I think (the family was) very private about it and didn't want anybody to know that there was something going on,” said Stefane Torres, a neighbor “Sadly, we need to know. People need to speak out.”

Amanda Kaplan’s family members spoke briefly to FOX5, but asked for privacy on Monday morning. Neighbors said the wife and her children seemed to be happy.

“I think (the family is) in shock and just wondering why,” said Torres. “There was no apparent reason to even think there was some type of abuse going on. I don't think they really knew.”

Henderson police wrote in their report that Michael Kaplan has been charged with murder in the past.

According to our search of the court website, the husband was charged with attempted murder in 2001 but was not convicted. Instead he served time in prison after he was convicted of a lesser charge.

FOX5 is currently working with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to get more details on that case.

The couples’ three young boys were originally taken by Child Protective Services. Neighbors say they are now living at their aunt’s house.
