Witnesses: motorcyclist speeding before fatal collision

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened early Saturday morning.

The collision occurred just before 1 a.m. near the intersection of Owens and Eastern Avenues according to Metro.

Police said according to witness statements and evidence at the scene a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Owens, before it overturned for an unknown reason, and causing the rider to make contact with the road.

The motorcyclist was transported to University Medical Center from the scene with life-threatening injuries. However, despite medical assistance the 23-year-old died at the hospital from his injuries according to Metro.

Witnesses who observed the collision told police the rider was exceeding the speed limit and riding "wheelies" before the crash happened.

This was traffic death number 77 so far this year for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said the collision remains under investigation and no other injuries were reported in the incident.
