LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A Las Vegas Metro police officer on a motorcycle was thrown from his bike Friday morning when he was struck from behind by a sedan in the southwest Valley.

According to Sgt. Richard Strader, of Metro police, the incident took place in the westbound lanes of Tropicana Avenue near Durango Drive at 4:15 a.m. The motorcycle officer was traveling in the far left lane when he was hit from behind.

The officer was ejected from the bike while the driver continued for about 1,000 feet before stopping. Strader said the driver rendered aid to the officer before additional units arrived at the scene.

Police took 19-year-old David Williams, who appeared to be impaired, in custody.

The officer was taken to University Medical Center with injuries to his neck, back and leg. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to Strader.

The officer was "conscious and speaking" at the hospital, Strader added.

Tropicana was shut down in both directions from Durango to Buffalo Drive, Strader said. Motorists were urged to use alternate routes.

The driver was expected to be booked with a count of driving under the influence causing an accident. Metro is expected to identify the officer at a later time.
