Events mark anniversary of Sept. 11 in Las Vegas

Several events are scheduled in Las Vegas to mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Freedom Ride

Defending Freedom will host its annual Freedom Ride.

It takes place at EOS Fitness on 7070 south Durango Road, near Interstate 215 from 2:45 p.m. Saturday until 5:46 a.m. Sunday.

Money raised from the event will help feed homeless United States Veterans.

Tolling of the Bells

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue will be in attendance with the community for the “Tolling of the Bells” Sunday morning.

At 6:59 a.m,, the time of the South Tower collapse at the World Trade Center, a bell will be rung in front of fire station five.

The ringing of the bell is a tradition of the fire service.

A United States flag that once flew over the World Trade Center will be hoisted to half-staff at the station.

9/11 Patriot Day Event

A 9/11 Patriot Day Event hosted by the Solera Veterans and First Responders Club will be held at the Solera Club House from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The program will start with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by speaks from Henderson police and fire. It will conclude with the showing of the “Boatlift Video."

9/11 Park Memorial

An annual memorial observance will be held at Police Memorial Park Sunday at 11 a.m.

Councilman Stavros Anthony and the 10-13 Club of Las Vegas will be at the service which will rededicate the memorial at the park.

Police memorial Park is located at 3250 Metro Academy Way, near Cheyenne Avenue and Hualapai Way.

Munchies for the Military

Volunteers with The Douglas J. Green Memorial Foundation will be filling care packages for deployed troops Sunday afternoon. 

The event takes place at Crossfit Raw at 7091 West Craig Road, near Tenaya Way at noon. Volunteers are welcome to the event. 

The foundation is collecting breakfast items, snack foods, and baby wipes. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so online

9/11 Firefighter Tribute and Procession

The Las Vegas Firefighters Benefit Association will hold a tribute and procession in downtown Las Vegas Sunday.

The association invited firefighters, police, and community members to march in honor of the first responders who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on Sept. 11.

Mike Tomko’s Annual Las Vegas Sept. 11 Firefighter Tribute and Procession will take place at 7 p.m. at the Third Street Stage in downtown. The march will start east on Fremont Street towards Third Street and Ogden Avenue.

The first 403 people to arrive will receive a complimentary American Flag.

Pahrump 9/11 tribute

GI USA and Pahrump residents will form the figure of the World Trade Center with glow sticks Sunday evening.

It will take place at 7 p.m. at the Albertsons Shopping Center on 200 south Highway 160.

Event organizers said they are hoping for at least 200 participants and said the Guinness Book of World Records will be monitoring the event for the record books.
