NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

Following the recapture of homicide suspect Alonso Perez Tuesday, North Las Vegas police on Wednesday addressed how he managed to escape custody in the first place.

Perez got out of his handcuffs and escaped from the North Las Vegas Detective Bureau on Friday. He then evaded police for four days. He didn’t go far, however. Members of an FBI task force located him at a home in the area of East Charleston Boulevard and North Pecos Street in Las Vegas.

During a press conference Wednesday, police showed surveillance video that captured Perez’s escape. He had been handcuffed to a bar attached to an interrogation table.

Using his bodyweight, he twisted the handcuffs until they broke, and he was free. He then positioned the handcuffs to appear as if they were unbroken and escaped through the roof of the building.

He then climbed down, took off and stole a pickup truck. It took about 40 minutes for police to notice he was missing. It was a mistake police said won’t be repeated.

“Someone will be monitoring the interrogation room at all times. When someone’s in custody or in an interview, we’re working on a live feed to each desk as well, but we have a viewing room,” the North Las Vegas Police Department’s Chief Alexander Perez said.

Police said the biggest mistake was not monitoring Alonso Perez at all times. Although there was a surveillance camera in the room, no one was monitoring that feed and no one was in the room with him.
